• Welcome to Natura 2000 Malta

Natura 2000 is the EU-wide network of nature conservation areas, established to ensure the survival of Europe’s most valuable and threatened terrestrial and marine species and habitats for future generations.

The Natura 2000 network is considered the largest coherent group of protected areas in the world. Terrestrial sites cover approximately 20% of the total land area of the EU (~850,000km2 in about 26,000 sites).

This website includes general information on Natura 2000, the EAFRD project leading to the development of Management Plans for such sites, and draft Management Plans for 22 Natura 2000 sites in Maltese Islands.
